Library Preservation Initiatives

This is a follow-up to the Library Boy post of April 15, 2015 entitled American Library Association Preservation Week.

Louis Mirando, Chief Law Librarian at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, has written a post at Slaw.ca that provides an "overview of some of the large-scale partnerships, projects and initiatives working to preserve our print heritage, particularly in law".

The post covers:
  • the JSTOR Print Archive (a project of the Center for Research Libraries, an international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries)
  • the Global Resources Law Partnership (a collaboration between the Center for Research Libraries and LLMC-Digital)
  • PALMPrint (Preserving America’s Legal Materials in Print), a pilot project to create a shared, circulating collection of primary US legal materials in print - the Supreme Court of Canada library is a member
  • various regional Last Best Copy agreements in Canada under which "one or several libraries would identify themselves as having a complete collection of a specified legacy print item ... and commit to keeping that collection in perpetuity, giving other libraries the option of disposing of their holdings of that title while ensuring at least one copy is retained and available to all".
